In a recent cyber attack, hackers gained unauthorized access to the court recordings database in Victoria state, Australia, disrupting its audio-visual in-court technology network. The breach mostly affected services related to recording and transcribing court hearings.

According to Louise Anderson, CEO of Court Services Victoria, data for recordings between November 1st and December 21st, 2023, might have been compromised due to this attack.

It was also suggested that some recordings before this time frame could also be at risk. However, aside from these specific audio records, no other systems or data appeared to have been disrupted by the violation.

In response to the breach, officials isolated and disabled the impacted network, allowing January hearings to proceed as planned.

The offending act falls under an alarming pattern highlighted in an Australian government report released in November 2023 pointing towards a rise in cyber attacks targeting national infrastructure — approximately one strike every six minutes is reported.
